The Soviet flag was red, the Russian flag has always been as it is now.

The SOVIET flag was red. With the hammer and sickle and five (?) stars in one corner. This is a variation of the old RUSSIAN flag. They omitted the Czarist symbol in the middle. Kind of like they omitted the Czar and millions of other Russians.
They changed it because they ostensibly got rid of the Communists. Funny how the head of the KGB is now the "President" of the "Russian Federation." I still don't trust those guys. I guess it's from growing up during the Cold War when we had to practice hiding under our desks - like that would save us from a nuclear holocaust...

The U.S.S.R. had a red flag with a gold hammer and sickle on it. That country ceased to exist in 1991 and ONE of the nations that emerged from the fall of the Soviet Union was the Russian Federation, complete with a new (or, at least, new again) flag.

the red flag was the flag of the Soviet Union. when the soviet union fell apart in 1991 each of its republics became a separate country and therefore had a separate flag. russia's flag is white on top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom.

Um, if you haven't heard, the Communist Nation, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, and the country is now Russia, leading them to change the flag
