Hard to compare, as they operate in different areas of the defense.
A few years back, there would be no contest, Ferdinand was one of the best in the world, whilst Cole was shaky at left back.
But fortunes are now somewhat reversed, with Cole quite solid and Rio making some comical blunders.
If push comes to shove, then I would say Cole is now better, but as I mentioned, it is hard to compare a left back and a fullback.

Essien has performed defender a large number of circumstances for Chelsea and that i imagine he can make an impressive striker with the staggering rocket foot he's were given. once you're speaking organic defender, i might want to assert Dani Alves from Sevilla. those brazilians have such impressive technical ability and can want to all be great strikers, thats what makes Brazil the type of staggering crew to exhibit screen, maximum circumstances.

ferdinand but there not the 2 BEST in soccer. u're forgettin about r. carlos, puyol, cannavaro, thuram...
they're many other defenders better than ashley cole

rio is better, but it's almost an unfair question to ask, because they play in different defending positions that require maybe different skills or jobs to be done. but i would definitely say rio is better.
