A bachelor's degree is a 4 yr degree. One gets a BA/BS/BFA in order to get a better job (more often) than one with only a HS degree.
The highest level degree depends on the field. Professional degrees include JD's, MDs, while the highest level graduate degree is a PhD or PsyD.

Bachelor's degree is the lowest accreditation you can receive from a University institution. However, it can also be granted as a post-grad degree with specialization.
Degrees don't really have any express 'purpose'...they indicate your level of training and knowledge in a given field, and along with make you more appealing to employers, they give you the opportunity to take further education at a higher level (Master's, or PhD). PhD, or Doctorate, is the highest degree.

Bachelor's degree is your first degree (usually four years at University) and many people start working on the strength of it.
However, with the economic climate as it is many go on to specialize in a Master's Degree
The next step is a Ph.D. If you achieve this status you will be addressed as Doctor. Original meaning Doctor of Philosophy.
University lecturers etc often have a Ph. D or research scientists etc etc
Who wants to be a full time student anyway??
