Overly high taxes and excessive pork barrel spending, deficit spending and an overall lack of fiscal responsibility. Standard and Poors has the US government's credit rating headed for junk-status by 2025. Reckless spending puts the country at risk for a serious financial crisis that can bring about a run on the dollar in international markets. The results being a rapid inflation, the inability of the government to provide the services they once promised they could and of course the social disorder that could follow.
Gas prices are high because we havn't seen any substantial investment in our energy infrastructure in almost 30 years. We have no new refineries, insufficient pipe lines and an aging system that isn't up to meeting the needs of the modern consumer. This came about because oil companies have not made a serious effort to update the infrastructure of this country and when they do people start screaming "Not in my backyard" and local resistance keeps most proposals to do something from ever taking hold. We're basically stuck trying to fit 2006 demand through a 1976 system. Yeah oil is up to $70 a barrel and that has some impact but the lack of sufficient infrastructure in this country is a much bigger issue as it is something we can control.

Greed, corruption and self preservation. Just about everything the government does (Congress and Executive Administration) is about staying in office more than it is for doing what is right for this country and its citizens.
Greed and corruption. Big oil controls its own destiny. They could be helping discover new energy sources but choose not to because they can make more money keeping our primary fuel gasoline. If an energy source was discovered which would be pennies on the dollar compared to what is currently spent or made, they wouldn't make as much money.
