The idea is that the day-night cycle is periodic--it's a cycle. So the end of one and the beginning of the next are pretty much the same, on average.

"Represent" what?

Let me simplify the question you posted, so that you understand my confusion.

"How does the temperature represent ....?"

You see? the question does not make sense. It has no answer.

Even "benjaminN" seems confused. The end of one cyle IS the beginning of the next. There IS no "on average." It just IS.
