It exists in people's minds, as a form of association and as way of making things look polarized.
So, while the entire population of each state might not align with the particular party, the concept certain exists and is measurable by its polarizing effect on the country.

Not only does the concept polarize, but the color job on the map is intended to make Republicans seem like more of a majority than they actually are. It's intended to create a permanent identity, like being a member of a club or religion. The fact that Republicans proudly identify with a color once synonymous with communism and the worldwide communist movement is amazing to me, but just goes to show how quickly things can change in the world of politics.
