At the current rate China is supposed to overtake the US in the next 15-20 years. At the current rate India is supposed to overtake the US in 45-50 years.
In both cases, economically and militarily.
If every Chinese person consumes as much per capita energy as every American consumes then China alone would need 125% of the total energy production of the entire world. Similar arguments for India. For this to happen either China and/or India will have to take control of world's energy sources or develop new energy sources. As much of "civilization" and world-power status depends on control and use of energy, either of the two methods would lead for these two to become world powers.
Europe has been on a merger course since the last World War. From the EEC to EC to EU. At first the European alliance was economic in nature, now it has a common currency, a parliament and a Federal "government". Within the next 20 years this union could actually become a single nation. Even today the Euro is higher than the Dollar and the European economy is larger than the American economy. With the alliance of Russia, Europe could as well become a military super power. They have different languages and they are different nations now, but Europe was a single nation once, under Rome. It became all these multiple nations when the power of Rome dwindled. Apply that logic to America, the US is one nation now, but as the American people get polarized and regional interests surface, it might be a possibility for the US not to be united but a multitude of states instead. Also with the rise of Europe and China/India, the UN will become a more functional organization.
If the UN became more powerful, there is a possibility of a united political body across the planet. A body like that will likely oppose the policies of the US, as the US uses the UN for its own ends. A body like that may realize that the US and its ambition to dominate the world is a threat to world peace. With the growth of China, Europe and India, these economies will be able to not trade with US and still be large and powerful. Especially with Chinese interests in Africa and South America, there is lots of room for growth even without the US the picture.
So finally, whichever way you cut it, the US loses out.

Good question, which is refreshing, as 99% of the questions in here are meaningless drivel.
I think in 50 years we will look much like Europe does today. We'll be socialist, have large populations of immigrants (legal and illegal) that refuse to assimilate, a stagnant economy, high unemployment, and constant terrorist attacks.
The "baby boomers" have spent the last 40 years voting themselves more and more entitlements. Eventually, paying these entitlements will become financially impossible with a free-market capitalist society. The choice will be between forcing us all into complete socialism, or getting rid of the entitlements. Considering the last 40 year trend toward socialism, I have no reason to think the "boomers" will do the right thing and get rid of the entitlement programs.
It's possible that our generation, or our children's could revolt against the "boomers" and return us to a free society. However, I find this scenario unlikely. We and our progeny will spend our lifetimes watching the "boomers" collecting all the government "freebies" and want them for ourselves.
We can be free, or we can be like the Europeans. The choice is ours.

I think that whatever oil is left (yes, folks, we reached the peak of production decades ago, but everyone seems to remain blind to this) will be restricted in use to only essential needs. that's right folks, owning a petrol-using vehicle will be days of the past. There will be a CONTINUATION on the WARS we are already fighting over resources, but it won't just be oil. it will be FORESTS and FOOD as well... we are overfishing our seas, and overcutting our forests, and overworking our land to the point of soil salination and ruin.
In the meantime, while our resources are being squandered by an arrogant society like all first world countries - our population continues to GROW. Beyond the global scale resource wars over what is left of our environment that we need to live on, there will be local scale rioting and looting. There will be some self-sufficient types that were smart enough to build low energy needs homes, farms run on solar powered and wind powered technologies and the ability to provide food and shelter for their family or small commune.
Those who remain ignorant, driving SUVs and working in jobs that will die out, will starve or fight those who are self sufficient to steal food. It is going to be an UGLY time on the planet, and there will be a FORCED drive back to an agrarian society as there will not be any resources left to provide cell phone service and the internet and things we do NOT need t survive, but take up precious energy to provide. Things are going to be a lot bleaker

Given that there is a world to live in, i believe that we will still be in stone age. The religious fanatics will have taken over the country for good, declared indefinite martial law, crowned the rotten Bushes to be the royal family and we will live under the thumb of some Bush-inbred.
Economically we will be off worse than ever, because the gap between rich and poor has not only widened, but is clearly defined. There will be 0.2% of super-rich and the rest will have to live under bridges.
Politically we will be isolated more than ever ad the rest of humanity will despise us with a vengeance. We will continue to push our interests through with our military force and we will subdue the planet. Of course we will not be able to look into the mirror of history anymore, because we will have become the global Dorian Gray.

America will be in a bad way - relatively speaking. it will no longer be the world's only super power and will economically behind china and russia (who will make a big come back through energy).
The party will be over as gas / oil becomes a rare commodity and USA pays for failing to invest heavily enough in alternative technologies.
One of the Bush girls will be president and prohibition will be re-introduced.

At the mercy of China, being more flexible with other countries on economical matters, probably legalizing employment for all inmigrants, Cuba probably will become part of the US.
Their tourist businesses probably collapsing for all the "security" requirments to visit the US. And people becoming very crazy with all the post wars crisis and lack of family values, kids without stable warm families or psychologically abused are the ones who will be in charge of the country.
Not very nice.

I won't be here in 50 years, most likely, and that's fine with me. I think the USA will most likely be in very bad shape by that time. If you had any idea of how much things have changed over the past 25-30 years, you'd feel the same. So many of the things that meant "USA" to me have fallen by the wayside. Ethics, values, and morals have all but vanished.

America will be like Russia is today. China will be what America is today.
America is headed towards bankruptcy due to the national debt. By the year 2025, the national debt will exceed what the US takes in. This will cause the rate of inflation to double every year.
When that happens, it will be the Great Depression x's 10.

It will depend on how the illegal alien issue is concluded.
If the border is closed and all illegal aliens deported, America will be better than ever....
If the border is left open and illegals allowed to trash our country, it will not be a pretty picture to behold.
Another issue that will have a smaller effect is whether or not America and the world will find the spine to deal decisively with Islamo-facism.
