There are many possible causes... anything from a bad sensor to a bad or failing fuel pump to a plugged fuel filter to an electrical issue. My advice would be to take it to a mechanic to have it diagnosed.

Gary Gearhead is right on the money. The old principles still apply. Always eliminate the simple before you assume the complex.
Checking spark (like Gary explained) is the right first step. Once you have determined you have spark, it's time to determine if you have fuel delivery. If you have fuel injection, you probably can't smell fuel at the throttle body, so don't even bother taking off the air cleaner. Take out a plug and crank the engine. Hold your hand over the spark plug hole while cranking. If there's no smell of unburnt gasoline, fuel delivery is the problem.
It's possible that you smell fuel, but the injectors are clogged to the point where there isn't enough gasoline to fire when sparked. I've seen this before. Get some starter fluid and spray it into the air cleaner intake while cranking the engine. If this is it, the engine will start, but when you shut it off, it won't start again.

If you have fuel and fuel pressure and the car will start (ignite) but not continue running, then you may have lost your timing belt as
Mommacass 76 said.
However, a worn distributor cap and rotor will also exhibit similar symptoms.
Before replacing cap and rotor, it is very easy to check the timing belt to see if it is still intact. Most cars have a timing belt cover with rubber plugs on the outside lining up with the camshaft(s).
You can pull a plug out and look inside. If you don't have the rubber plugs, loosen the timing cover bolts (don't drop them anywhere) and pull the cover out slightly so you can look inside a little. If you cannot see the belt itself, watch the camshaft sprocket. If it rotates while someone else cranks the starter, your timing belt is ok. Replace your distributor cap and rotor.
If the camshaft sprocket does not turn, your timing belt is toast because the camshaft sprocket is driven by the timing belt. No need to mess with the cap and rotor. Replace the timing belt.

You should take a Philips head screw driver and pull a spark plug wire off the plug and insert the Philips head screw driver into it and lay the screw driver on the frame, or engine where the metal part of the screw driver is about an inch from some metal part of the car and then watch it while someone spins the engine over. If there isn't a BLUE spark that will jump the one inch between the two metal parts [of the driver & the car] then you need to find and repair your ignitoin system .

What the two above mentioned. must be the IAC valve is undesirable. Or a intake leak yet given which you have a three.1L engine, that often doesnt have that type of issues like the three.8L engines might or the 4.6L engines on the Cadillacs might. however the RPM's will replace once you have a open vacuum hosse like that . often the gas rigidity regulator would be undesirable via leaking, it incredibly is often the main substantial matters with them. once you pulled off that vacuum hose, there ought to have been gas popping out if it grow to be undesirable
