Hi. I live in San Francisco and I have been searching all over for some dance groups that meet and teach common dances such as ballroom, salsa, tango, etc. I am particularily interested in Country Line Dancing. Most of the places I have checked out charge a fee or require membership. I was wondering if there are any dance groups that meet for free or if there are any dance classes that are offered at no charge within the city. If so, when and where do they meet and could I have the contact information? Would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Free dance classes, as far as I know, are usually an introduction to a series of classes that you have to pay a fee for.

If you're reasonably young, you could join a college team. They usually offer classes, and you can take them in exchange for some simple work that you can contribute.

As far as I know, there are no college dance teams in San Francisco. However, I'm sure there are dance groups and dance enthusiasts there on campus. Those are free and open to public sometimes. Try looking into that.

Try good studios like Metronome or Pick (google them, I lost their contact info). As far as I know, they don't require membership. Not free, but affordeable classes.

Other than that - no, I don't know dance groups that offer free classes. The reason is simple - teachers have to pay rent of the dance floor. Even if someone decides to teach fro free, they'd have to pay out of pocket for the floor usage. Churches sometimes let people use the floor for free, but that's kind of hard to find.

Try www.balroomdancers.com forum - people there might know.
Also try serching the studios near you using that website. Call them and ask what do they offer.

Most places in the City proper that do line dancing also offer guys wearing assless chaps. You need to head to Sonoma County or something.
