Previously , in the days of pentium IIIs , all the facilities were to be added extra. for eg,if you want good quality display you go and buy a good display card (a pci card) , if you needed sound, buy a sound card, modem buy a modem (once again a pci card).
now it is the USB generation. most of the utilities come onboard, while other devices work on USB, so there is no use left for 100mhz pci bus,. instead the R&D people have worked out with the latest highspeed PCI-express bus, much faster and with a broader bandwidth.

some motherboards come with two PCI-E slots, and most come with four plus PCI slots. If you have a micro motherboard you will only have two or three pci slots, so go for the normal size board. My Pc has six PCI slots and it's an ASUS

What would you possibly need them for?
Decent boards have LAN built-in. Audio too.
Even if it didn't...What else do you need for gaming besides sound and net.
