All these answers confused me and I am a Cypriot:) Cyprus is a European Country. Geographically it may be confusing because it's close to 3 continents, Europe, Asia and Africa. Spain is next to Africa but that does not make it an African country. Cyprus is the most southeastern region of Europe.

Since both Greece and Turkey are in Europe, then so is Cyprus.

The European Union does not define Europe, since each new member nation must conform to certain financial and social standards before acceptance. There are still part of Central Eurpope that are not yet members. Many are from the former USSR.

Turkey has an application pending for EU membership.

Its a divided island. The Greek part joined Europe about a year ago so there are no travel restrictions for Europeans, but the Turkish occupied part did not. It is now classified as the closest part of Europe to the middle east.

Cyprus is an island in the mediterrenean. Islands are generally associated to a specefica continent, most of the time for political/cultureal reasons. Since it is of Greek culture (in part) and belongs to the UE, it is considered in Europe.
The same way the others mediterranean islands such as Corsica, Sicily, Sardinia, Balearic islands are considered to be in Europe becaus they are of European culture and belong to European countries such as Italy, France or Spain.
