A proper firewall will leave no ports open to connection requests, thus no path for someone to break in. Others have suggested some software firewall. There are also firewall appliances, and a router between your computer and the internet would be acting as a firewall too.

Assuming you've got a broadband connection with a static IP address, you'd be VERY wise to install a Firewall program. I recommend the free version of Zone Alarm, and it's available for download at the below link:

If you do not have a static IP address from your ISP, then you have nothing to worry about. A static IP costs you extra, so you would know if you have one. Each time you log onto your ISP you get a new ip address, so all you need is a good firewall, and antivirus program.

This is very common information and easily recorded by just about any website you may visit. So the information itself is not inherently dangerous. Windows firewall or a Nat enabled router will pretty much protect you from an inbound attack. To protect yourself from attacks that may originate from within your own system due to inadvertent loading of spyware then you need to consider a bi directional firewall.

If possible, change your configuration (different IP, etc). If you have win XP you can block network connections (My Network Places, properties, change Windows Firewall settings). Or try getting a router and firewall installed. There are options, as there are also alot of jerks out there.
