THIS IS NOT A SALES PITCH!
Finding a good and honest bookkeeper is hard to find. Lots of people just because they can pay some bills at home and semi balance a checking account think they are bookkeepers. Try going to www.psdoffice.com. Go to employee relations and the bookkeeper quiz should help you out. This women helped me with a few of my business adventures and she knows her stuff. Unfortunately bookkeepers are privileged to alot of important information within a company and that information in the hands of the wrong person is very bad believe me.
Good luck with your business!

FInd out what experience they have. Where they've worked, what they've done. That's a big step. I've been a bookkeeper for the last 10 years and I love it. I currently take care of 3 different business accounts and my personal account. I would love to take on more but I have my hands full teaching 6th grade English as well. You could also give them scenarios and see how they would react to them and what they would do. If they don't know how to take care of themselves and their own finances then they have no business getting involved in yours!

You can use these for both:

Take me through your resume.

If we were to call your current supervisor, in which area of accounting would he or she say is your strongest? Which area would he or she say is your weakest?

What unique skills or knowledge can you contribute to our company?

What additional training or experience will we need to provide you with in order to perform the duties of this position?

Tell me about your experience in reconciliation.
When do you plan on attaining your CPA? What steps will you take to prepare yourself?

Give us an example of how you have used your creativity to solve a problem on the job.

Tell us about any accounting process that you've either developed or revised. How would you evaluate the effectiveness of your work?

Why have you chosen a career in Accounting?

What aspect of accounting do you dislike the most?

What salary are you seeking?

How does your experience and qualifications match up to the job?

Do you have anything to add?

Ask them if they have ever kept two sets of books for someone. If they have then do not hire them.
As a warning I know of many business people that nearly went bankrupt because they had a bad accountant. Even if you hire them don't turn a blind eye to what is going on.

The best questions I"ve ever had asked of me, and have had asked of others are:

What do you feel is your best trait?
What do you feel is your worst trait?
Why should we hire you?
What did you like best about your last boss?
What did you like least about your last boss?
What do you like about this type of position?
What job would you rather be doing than this?
