Get the most amount of RAM you can afford..... the more it has, the less it has to rely on VIRTUAL MEMORY.... where it uses part of your hard drive to temporarily stick things it's run out of space for using in RAM... which of course means writing to the hard drive...... which uses up the battery faster.
I've read if you've got at least 1GB of RAM, you can just about get away with disabling Virtual Memory in Windows.

For what you're talking about, 512MB would probably be fine. 512 has been the standard for a while, and it's still fine; 1GB is only necessary for high-end programs or a whole lot of programs at once.

If it's a 333 mhz processor, you better check to see if it will even take 1 gb of ram. If it will, go for the 1gb ... then again you can wait and add another 512 later.

1 gb would be better, especially on the games. It can only help. It will never hurt to have more RAM.

Five years from today, you'll need 2GBs to run programs.
Remember when 64KB seemed like a lot?
