it's a totally relaxing sensation. seriously. I've been 'under' at least five times with no problems whatsoever. you'll have an IV in your arm, then at some point they will tell you when they are about to administer the anesthesia into the line that's already in your arm. they ask you to start counting backward from 30. you'll say 30, 29, 28 and then you are fast asleep. it's that fast. but just like going to sleep (quickly). when you wake up, you'll be in the recovery room, you might be groggy. the chances of you waking up during the procedure are miniscule (you probably have a better chance of winning the lottery).
please don't fret.
everything will be fine.
seriously. there is nothing to worry about.
they will put a tube down your throat (they do for all surgery) but you will never feel it going in or coming out. doubtful you will ever even know that it has been there at all (won't feel any residual soreness). it has to be there just in case you start to have any trouble breathing during the surgery, then they have an open airway. just a precaution that is required in all operations.
if you have further questions, you should ask your surgeon & nurses, & other hospital personnel. that's what they are there for. they should really explain everything fully and what you should expect. if they don't, ask them!
good luck.
but you won't need it.
you will be fine.
it's a piece of cake.

Anytime you go under anesthesia, it's big time medicine. But, if your are confident in your hospital and doctor, then the odds are with you. I recently had knee surgery. I was also concerned and a little nervous about just how this was all going to happen. I walked into the OR and laid down on the operating table. The anesthesiologist was there and made me feel at ease, making sure that I was comfortable, joking around and generally chatting. He also explained just what he was going to do, and how things would go. My anesthesia was given to me by a needle into the top of my hand. When the doctor said that he was going to put me out, I was determinded to watch the clock and see how long it took. Well, the next thing I knew I was waking up in recovery and it was all over. I'm a big guy, and it's still a mystery to me how they got me from the operating table to the recovery bed. Anesthesia works so fast it's amazing. Don't forget too, anesthesiologists are highly trained specialized doctors. They continually monitor all your vital signs and make sure that all is well. They make sure that you stay under, and believe me, you don't feel a thing. It's over before you know it. Good luck with your surgery, you'll be fine, and you'll have a story to tell too.

You have nothing to worry about. I've been under 2x and both times were fine. Once you go to "sleep" you don't feel, see, or hear anything. The anesthesiologist knows how much anesthesia to give you in order to keep you "asleep" during the procedure. If you are still nervous when you go in, you can ask all the questions you want to your doctor/nurses/anesthesiologist. But, you will be fine! Don't be nervous.

.. Tina ..
.. your best bet is to go into any surgery in a relaxed mental and physical state. It not only makes the work easier on the surgeon, it should keep your mind relaxed also.
.. the chances of waking up are like .04 % (http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2004-10-22-waking-up_x.htm)
.. if you convince yourself you will wake up .. I would think that probability goes up. (sorta like stigmata .. if you believe it enough.) Conversly .. if you truly convince yourself you won't wake up .. you won't.
.. good luck.
.. try mental relaxation tecniques right before the surgery. Maybe even some physical relaxation and stretching would help.

don't worry, the entire procedure will be over before you know it. don't fear the general anaesthesia, coz it's been done for a long time now, and the percentage of going back to normal activities of daily living is very high.
regarding intubation before the operation, you'll not feel the excuriating pain coz you're sedated. and you'll be extubated when the procedure is done before transferring you to the recovery room.
don't forget to pray. God bless you....

For some reason, this situation sounds ordinary. Lord, I come to you presently, asking which you be with the nephew, the mummy, and this finished kin. practice them mercy and love. I pray his toddler survives. All in accordance with Thy Will. In Jesus' call, thank you, Father. Amen. † Comforting Prayer Warrior †
