They'd have to run the table and not have a couple teams from a stronger conference go undefeated as well. Their schedule simply isn't strong enough without some help. 1 ranked team on their schedule (Louisville) and their non-conference schedule isn't that tough (Marshall, Eastern Washington, Maryland, @East Carolina, @Mississippi State).
And WVU did play for the national title in the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, when Notre Dame cheapshotted them repeatedly and claimed a national title under the slime Lou Holtz (Irish obviously forgets the three or four personal foul calls in the first few minutes of the game).

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Slam ole' Lou because you still have the taste of Championship defeat in your mouth there TheOnlyBeldin.....
OK, now with that out of the way, let's get to the actual question...Will WVU play for the title?
It is possible, not likely though. Right now they are nursing some injuries that shouldn't hinder them when the season starts, but may not heal enough to last through some rough hits. They should win the Big East as a slam dunk. They will definitely get a BCS bowl game, but I don't think it will be for the Title.

I don't believe WVU has ever played for a national championship in football. See no reason for that to change this year.

I don't think they will... I don't think they can avoid the upset bug that's going to bite them in November.
In November they play at Louisville, at Pittsburgh and they have South Florida at home. They'll lose one of those games and that will knock them out of the Nation Title Game if they don't have any losses before that. They're defense will be a weak link, mainly the secondary.
But I predict that they'll go 9-3 with losses to Louisville, Rutgers, and Maryland. I think they'll finish 2nd in the Big East and play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

Yes. They play in a conference that is still regarded as a conference that can play in the National Championship, and the schedule is easy. If they can beat overrated Louisville, than they have a good shot.

I believe they have a good opportunity especially if they can defeat Louisville on the road this year.
