Roger Bannister,once president of the Oxford club,
has become the first man to run a mile in less than four minutes- that was 3mins 59.4 seconds, achieved at the Iffley Road track in Oxford and watched by about 3,000 spectators on May 6, 1954.

Roger Bannister of Great Britain, all the way back in 1954 (date was May 6), was the first person to run a sub 4:00 mile in a race. His time was 3:59.4. It might be possible someone else (or himself) had done it another time, perhaps in training, but as far as we know, it didn't happen. Current record is 3:43.13 by Hicham El-Guerrouj of Morocco.
