if you're cervix is long it means the baby isn't putting pressure on it, and isn't dropping down into your pelvis yet.. which is good if you're not very far along... when the baby starts to put pressure on your cervix (starts dropping or lightening) then it compresses your cervix and it shortens, and then starts to open (dialate) which is a good thing if you are near the end and are hoping to have the baby soon. normally your cervix should be very long (almost hard for them to reach).

Some women develop a short cervix during pregnancy. It is rare but it happens. It is called 'incompetent cervix' It can cause the baby to come early. If they see that the cervix is shorter than usual then they can keep an eye on it. If it continues to become a problem then they can close the cervix by the way of a stitch called a cerclouge.

As I said before, it is rare. It is just routine to check for it.

My sister-in-law has an 'incompetent cervix' causing her baby to be born 11 weeks early. Baby is fine at 10 months old.

To see if you have an incompetent cervix, a condition which can result in an extremely early delivery or stillbirth. An incompetent cervix is essentially not strong enough to hold in the weight of the baby and amniotic fluid, so it slowly effaces and dialates under the pressure way before full term.

During a pregnancy its to make sure its in good functioning shape and can easily support the pressure of pregnancy and remain sealed.

Usually they dont check it unless they notice something during a regular pelvic exam. Its to rule out or confirm certain things. Unless your doctor has given you cause for concern there really isnt anything to worry about.

Worst case senerio you have to spend the last months of your pregnancy in bed and avoid sex clear through. But in most cases its nothing serious.

Ask your OB to find out for your own personal situation.

Ask your sonographer, radiologist or Dr. on this one.

I know they checked my cervix on an ultrasound along with the placenta and baby.
