Teller does not speak while performing although there are occasional exceptions, mostly when the audience is not aware that it is his voice that is being heard. Teller's trademark silence originated during his youth, when he earned a living performing magic at frat parties. He found that if he maintained silence throughout his act, people got bored with heckling him and stopped.

Despite his trademark of never speaking on stage, Teller has spoken in a number of films and television shows, as well as in numerous radio, print, and television interviews
Teller also spoke several lines at the end of Penn & Teller Get Killed, having played his usual silent role for nearly the entire movie. He also appeared (and spoke) in Mysteries of Magic, Volume 3. He also speaks occasionally in the travelogue series Penn & Teller's Magic and Mystery Tour, though even in this series he mostly lets Penn speak on his behalf.

He spoke extensively in the History Channel special Houdini: Unlocking the Mystery, though he is shot with a back light to hide his face in silhouette. Teller also speaks off camera in the Showtime television series Bullshit!. On a celebrity episode of Fear Factor, Teller briefly broke his silence by excitedly but very quietly exclaiming "Yes!" after learning he and Penn were continuing on to the next round due to one of his competitors failing to successfully complete a stunt (incidentally this Fear Factor episode's cash prize was in aid of charity).

When Penn & Teller were interviewed on The Daily Show one of Craig Kilborn's 5 Questions was "Teller! Say Something!" In response, Teller covered his mouth and said "**** you, Craig." His words are also frequently read in various print interviews.
After almost every one of their performances, including their current stint at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, the duo mingles with the crowd in the lobby of the theatre for photos and autographs. Teller usually talks with all comers, although that was not always the case.

Yes, Teller talks. He chooses not to. Penn is the talker, the funny man, and really the distraction; while he's chatting up the audience, Teller can do all the mechanical magic, slide-of-hand, and other on-stage yet behind-the-scenes stuff. It's also a bit of a play on their names; Penn should be the quiet one, coming up with their lines, and Teller should be the talkative guy, but it's flipped. It's all an act, and really, have you seen anybody else like them? It's their shtick.

I went to see Penn and Teller perform in Vegas a few years ago, and they had a meet and greet afterword. I got a chance to talk to them and when Teller asked me how I liked the show I freaked. He told me "It's an act sweetheart" and walked away.

To tell the truth, I've never seen him talk nor have I ever seen him give an interview. It's always Penn that does the talking.

Heh, I'm sure he does, in private. It's just part of the act! Just like Jay and Silent Bob.
