Large area - Cover in plastic. It doesn't need to be black. Clear plastic will "solarize" the soil, and kill both the grass and the weeds.

For small spots - straight vinegar in a spray bottle.

Neither of these methods will leave any lasting toxins in the soil or prevent you from planting something else in that spot at another time.

Apple Cider Vinegar will kill grass and it's not toxic to ant pets you may have, plus its a deterrant to bugs. Easiest way for large areas though is to put plastic down over the area. Not sure how much you wanna kill, but there ya go.

Please don't use chemicals! You don't say how big of an area, but ....put heavy black plastic down as tightly as you can over the area (available at Home Depot, etc.). Weight the plactic down with rocks or landscape pins (they look giant U). In 6-8 weeks, no more grass, weeds, whatever.

iodized salt, sprinkled directly into cracks where grass is growing, is very effective. It will kill plants because most plants can not survive in salt brine.
