The rivalry begin when the Red Sucks traded Babe Ruth to the Yanks for about $100K at that time. Since then (until 2004) they haven't won a WS. This is why this rivalry is one of the greatest in sports history compared to the Bears-Packers or the Lakers-Celtics. Recently, the rivalry between the two teams became very heated when Pedro Martinez a pitcher at the time was throwing at some Yank players which cause a bench clearing fight which led to Pedro pushing Don Zimmerman (a former Yankee Coach). This event took place two years ago.

If you're neither a Yankee fan or a Red Sucks fan then it shouldn't really annoy you plus this is where Fox or ESPN get a lot of their ratings in the season and post season.

It's more the fans than the players. A New York accent just sounds grating and painful to a Bostonian. The first thing a Bostonian will ask a New Yorker is "You're not a Yankee fan, are you?" Like asking a German if he used to be a Nazi. The New Yorkers don't like Bostonians, but not just for the Red Sox. The Patriots and Celtics bother them too.

Well, it isn't like the towns are that far apart (4 hours or so) so it's pretty much a "cross-town" rivalry. After all, Chicago and Green Bay are about 6 hours apart and have a huge rivalry. They were also some of the first professional baseball teams, so it's a big deal when they play since they've been competitors for nearly 100 years.

The Red Sox hate the Yankees. The yankees don't hate the Red Sox. It started when the Sox traded the Babe, and the sox fans have hated them ever since.Besides, the yanks love to beat up on Boston.

Red Sox fans hate the Yankees for the same reason every other fan hates the yankees (because Geore Steinbrenner is a fag who makes the game completely unfair).. and Yankees fans hate the Red Sox because they can and because they feel superior... kinda like a senior beating up a freshman in high school... they hate them because they can

Because of one man, Babe Ruth. And because of the fact that the Red Sox have finished second to the Yankees in the AL East for eight or nine straight years.

You get these rivalries because both teams have a history of winning games. The winner of that division usually is either New York or Boston. The other teams usually don't even come close. The rivalry also is helped by the teams being so close in proximity to one another.

Have you noticed that people from Boston hate people from New York and vice versa? Don't know why; maybe it's just some east coast rivalry thing, maybe the Bostonians think they're superior because their town is the heart of the American Revolution, maybe the New Yorkers think they're superior because their town is the biggest in the U.S., who knows? I'd have to look it up, but maybe they're the two biggest pennant race winners in the American League so they're always fighting each other for the top seed...who knows?
