Because the Greeks actually use a different alphabet from us, so all names are phonetically spelled. So your guess would be just as good as anyone else's at how the name should be spelled.

As the poster above said, the Greek alphabet is substantially different from that which we are accustomed to. It has less characters than our alphabet, and therefore, direct transliterations are very often impossible. In the original Greek, a iota would have been used for the second to last vowel in his name, however, due to the position in the word, the pronunciation would have been closer to that of an 'e'. Ancient Greek phonetics are very complicated, and one character can have several different pronunciations, based on the position it holds within the word.

That is one of my cat's name and I spell it Archimedes. He stays in the closet or in a street drain most of the time. He must be solving mathematical equations. He likes pi.
