India has the fastest growing economy in the world. It has one of the best doctors, engineers and chemists. They have their own weapons to defend their selves from enemies.
The country is changing with speed of light so why is it still considered 3rd world country.

ok wow. half the people that answered ur question don't know what they are talking about. most companies that have made america such a big 'superpower' consist of indians. microsoft, IBM, etc. etc. all this technology comes from India. also, all this outsourcing and hiring indians is proof that india has a pretty solid reputation on all academic grounds. i am a student and a resident the in USA and I refuse to believe, as some answerers have said, that Indian doctors and engineers are incapable...please. at least, indian students go to school, are not influenced by drugs, and have respect for their relationships. and other countries should keep in mind that India became independent 59 years ago...whereas countries like america have been independed for more than 200! this is a COUNTRY we are talking about, it takes time for it to grow. and watch, someday India will progress until it doesn't fit the third world country banner.

India has made some great strides but it's social and infra structure are still primitive. By social I mean the middle ages mind set of the rural and even some urban areas is far too serious to over look. The infra structure is barely early 20th century in the rural areas and that's the advanced rural areas most is still British colonial technology it's more than past time for India to evolve to a world player this is always a painful process but well worth it in the end.

India believes it is a world superpower solely because it has nuclear weapons, a phalacy shared by the French.

India has the fastest growing economies but half the population cannot afford daily essentials, such as food and/or a place to live.

And I hate to sound like a typical American, but if its so great there why do so many migrate here (both legally and illegally) every year?

(By the way, the Indian doctors that come here suck, really bad.)

Beacuse more than half of the inhabitants still live in extreme poverty.
Columbia Encylcopedia defines the Third World as: the technologically less advanced, or developing, nations of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, generally characterized as poor, having economies distorted by their dependence on the export of primary products to the developed countries in return for finished products. These nations also tend to have high rates of illiteracy, disease, and population growth and unstable governments.
While India is technologically advanced and has a stable government, India still has a huge population of poor uneducated people partly perpetuated in the traditional caste system.

Maybe because when it comes down to it, people unfortunately have a stereotype about the country. Hell I live overseas myself and when i tell people that I'm from Texas they think that i ride horses and work on a ranch. I don't think that people mean it. it's just that they are unaware and it goes back to stereotyping. Plus if you look at the news they never show how a country is developing they only show the negative side. Like i said people just don't know. And for some ignorance is bliss

They also have a country full of people living, eating, & going to the bathroom on the streets. They live in dire poverty with no hope of change because of the caste system. They have children there selling themselves and/or their parents selling them to make a tiny bit of money. When India has changed considerably more it will be taken off the "3rd World Country" list.

hi,
this is bcoz though india have done some progress.
most people are still very poor and they are loosing hope.
also leaders dont have any vision for country.
final thing is , if country has 35% under poverty line then that country has to be in 3rd world( or 4th?)

1. Who says that?

2. Who cares?

. When India has the guts to collectively stand up and say to the world, ' I judge your judgement of me,' only then will the rest of the world take note.

It is necessary that she solve some of her pressing problems, such as poverty, illness, injustice to Dalits and other minorities, and so on, but I defy anyone to show me a country that has solved the problems of poverty, illness and injustice toward its minorities.

In any case, others' opinions are unimportant. It only matters that you know yourself. I know I am not expressing myself well, but I hope the point is clear.

here are some facts on india that show why...

Life expectancy at birth:
total population: 64.71 years
male: 63.9 years
female: 65.57 years (2006 est.) (compared to low 80s in america)

HIV/AIDS - people living with HIV/AIDS:
5.1 million

GDP - per capita (PPP): (how much someone makes in a year is a good way to imagine this number)
$3,300 (compered to almost 40,000 for america)

Population below poverty line:
25% WOW 1/4 of the population of hte world's most populous country are living in poverty... and that's by India's own standards... the truth is most people in India have to live on less than 100 dollars a month

the doctors that you refer to almost always practice in the united states or Europe, not India

Public debt:
53.8% of GDP

Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife

in essence, the standard of living in India for the vast majority of the population is very low.
