1 hand is 4 inches. you have to use a leveler when measuring the horse, and you measure from the ground to the withers. if the horse is not a whole number of hands, (say, its 15.3 hands) the decilmal doesnt mean 3 tenths. it means 3 inches. and 3 is the highest decimal it can be. so if a horse is 15.3 hands, it is 15 hands and 3 inches. get it?

you can buy a special measuring tape that will measure your horse or, there are 4 inches in one hand and you could do it that way too. Take the measurement in inches and divide it by four.

It was a way to measure before there was such a thing as a tape measure. A man's hand was about four inches from side to side so they used it as a way to measure. You only measure up the the top of the shoulder. You don't measure all the way up to the top of the head.

There is a Measuring stick that you can buy to measure you horse. one hand is equal to four inches, you measure the horse up to it's withers, so don't go all the way to it's ears.
