Well lullaby, I suppose that before mobile phones became available, nobody needed one. It's only when they become universally available that people suddenly believed they could not do without them. Strange? You have to believe that I've lived over 60 years without a mobile, and very happily too. I don't like them, they make you instantly available to everyone. The only reason anyone should ever need one is for dire emergencies, not just for the sake of idle chatting which is brainless. If a person can't organise their life without a mobile phone, then I fear for the intellectual sanity of this country. Next time you are walking beside a river, take your mobile phone out of your pocket and chuck it in the water. You'll feel miles better and freer afterwards. Go-on you know it makes sense.

How did people survive before fire? You grew up with them so they are apart of your culture, but I did not and still don't have one. I am thinking they would be handy for emergencies, but I don't even like to pick up my "land line" half the time. What would happen if you spent a whole day not talking to anyone else? Could you survive?
Are we so consumed by culture that there is no you, but how we are reflected by others? Can we be still and watch the sunset or listen to the crashing of the waves? What a beautiful planet we have to live on, are we too busy to see and appreciate how truly fortunate we are? Are we so lonely that we have to be connected to someone at all times?
I know they can be handy but, somehow it makes me sad to see people with these things attached to their heads. Somewhere in my gut it tells me there is something wrong.
And at the same time I wonder if I must get my 4 yr old one at some point when she is older, so she will not be ostracized. What a confusing world.

They either used payphones or waited until they arrived somewhere with a phone to make a call. There are still some people who either due to religious beliefs or similar do not wish to use mobile phones and they manage ok. It is very simple.. you tell people where you are heading for so that if they need to contact you they phone ahead of you and leave a message for you to ring them back when you arrive.

haha. I was just watching an older Seinfeld episode where the four characters got lost in a mall and separated and all hell broke loose because of it. My husband said, "Too bad they didn't have cell phones." I am 28, so I basically grew up without widespread use of cell phones, and I don't really know what we did 'back then.' Like another user said, we used pay phones. But when I think about it, pay phones have always sucked .

They had to be organised... they couldn't necessarily rely on being able to phone anyone at anytime and cancel appointments or make immediate connections.
Me, I have no mobile, I'm doing just fine... 'write me a letter, drop me a line/ expressing point of view/ indicate precisely what you mean to say/ your's sincerely fading away'...

It's sad to think that people are so desperate to miss that phone call they invest in cell phones and carry them around like their life would end if they lost it. When will this need for instant communication end? I don't want or need to be in contact with people that badly to carry one of those things.

That is so funny! I am old enough to remember when we had party lines at home! I had a cell phone for several years, but then though I just didn't need to be that accessible! WE didn't miss them because we never had them!

hey i still do not have one. We do not always need to be on the phone. People who drive on the phone are more dangerous, and i have noticed they are rude to the friends they are suppose to be hanging out with by talking to others on the phone instead of hanging with there friwends they are with.
We are not that important.

It was lovely. When you were out no one pestered you. If you needed to call someone there were pay phones, many in booths. They were located on corners and in buildings, and even in restrooms. I don't answer my cell phone unless I know who it is and I feel like talking to them. A text message will be acknowledged faster by me. No TALKING. NO VOICES!
