Wait until you see how the room is laid out.
You can make some make-shift shelves with concrete blocks and 2x4's (we painted the blocks orange and black for our school colors)

There are also some good pvc or plastic type shelving units at your local dollar store or walmart. THey run about $10 for 3-4 shelves.

Don't haul in too much, you'll only have to haul it back home.

Don't get anything until you know what's there.

The first year I was in college, I wasn't aware I had two HUGE storage areas about the closet. It really helps to go there, put everything away, and THEN see what you really need in the way of storage.

Your first day in your new dorm, go with your parents to Target and look into bins for under the bed or over the closet, and talk with your rooommate about a shelving.

Plastic file cabinets work if you put your bed in a loft formation. You can put your desk, dresser, and file cabinet under there.

What you should do is move into the room and put away what you can. Then, go to your home improvement store or walmart or target and look at shelving options for you. You don't want to take more than you need to to college. Get mom and dad to take you out to the store to buy essentials.
Don't forget you can get bed risers and lift your bed up and put drawers under there. You can get a bookshelf unit, take off the bottom, and stand it up on your desk. You can fit books up there and lots of other stuff!
Good luck and study hard!!

You could try getting a few of those really thin bins to slide under your bed for more storage and probably a plastic tower with drawers to hold stuff like toiletries, papers, etc. You're probably going to be surprised by how little storage space you have, so plan ahead and bring some of your own.

Check out your room first. Some dorm rooms are tiny and offer little space and others are much nicer and have more space.

Once you look at your room go to Wal-Mart or Target and get those underbed boxes if you need more space. Also they have other organizing and storage type things such as those stackable drawers etc.
