I'm not sure about your family being shallow. I just think that they're afraid you 'might' turn into a lesbian if you keep seeing her.

There are some misconceptions of homosexuality, and one is that if you like men, you like ALL men. Or if you're a gal, and you like girls, you must like all girls. And another close to it, since you like people from your same sex, all you want is sex with people from your same sex. This is silly, since I like women, but I don't like all women. But maybe they feel that your friend will try to get into your pants, and bla bla bla bla

Explain to them that you don't have any gay tendencies, and that she's fine by that, but you just like being friends.

Good luck!

Well this is a tough one because you dont want to hurt your friends feelings and you dont want to disrespect your family, so i think that you should choose the side that you want to be in...
some questions you should consider; How long have you know your friend??? Is she the kind of who is always be there for you, and who you could relate to???
now with the family; where are some question you should think about; are their supportive???? Do they know that she means alot to you??? and also although they might know what she is but do they know how important she is to you???
with this in mind you can you can conclude yourself

Speak to ur family that they should trust you. Dont think such things about ur family, you cannot change anybody's attitudes overnight. Keep your behaviour at your best and nobody will have any confusion.

Be yourself. You are learning about different people and that can't be so wrong, especially since you are comfortable with yourself. A person's sexual preference doesn't define who they are.
