He is a newly hired Asst Mgr and I hear his subordinates do not respect him based on his lack of experience. I was asked to help him complete a project, only to get insulted and hear about it through another honest employee.

You can only lose if you jaw jack it up more than your co-worker has already done to you.
Either the manager knows it is not a co-workers place to judge the performance of other co-workers, or the manager is friends with this co-worker and not you and that's office politics.
You can't really win anything and only stand to get in hot water yourself by pursuing this issue.
Move on to your next task and just work is my advice, unless your manager comes and directly asks you about this. My response would be "I really don't have time to evaluate the other people because I'm trying to work hard at the tasks given to me." I would tell the boss "the only thing that concerns me is how you feel about my performance, not my co-workers."
On a more humorous note, you were not defiled, only defamed and people who defame others usually have no self confidence or self respect. Be glad it wasn't you doing the complaining.
Good Luck.

Ask to speak to your manager and then without retaliating set the record straight. This will only work if you talk about you and the project.....not your coworker.

I think after the dust settles I would have a quiet mature talk with my coworker.

Well I guess you would just need to continue to be a good employee so your manager knows it's not true.

if you helped him out, you need to snap someone like that back in their place. don't be overly mean about it, but enough so that he understands that he still needs to cut his teeth a little bit before he can take on a position of talking smack.
