I was born in England, my wife is American and we both live here in America. So I have seen both sides of the argument.
I do not wish to offend anybody, but this is how I see it.
When I lived in Europe the only insight in to the USA was through newspapers and TV. America is a capatilist country, and portrayed as such. This gives the impression everyone is out for themselves, selfish etc. Most Americans are inwarding looking only, ie they only see things that affect them. In Europe we have had many wars on our own soil, we have experienced first hand what it is like to have your country threatened. Europe fought many wars, many of which were nothing to do with us. For example in World War 2 the British joined the Allies to defend a country we had agreed to protect years ago. Britain did not join because it had been attacked. The USA knew what was happening but chose not to help, that was until America itslef was attacked at Pearl harbor. Europeans are used to looking outside their own borders.
To say Europeans cannot stand Americans is incorrect. I am a European and I married an American, and I live in the USA.

America has a "me me me" attitude. Europeans feel insulted by that. We expect sacrifices we make to be made equally in the world in which we all share. Europe is cutting harmful emmisions from cars and industry and signed the Kyoto agreement, America refused to sign saying it would harm the economy. YES it WILL harm the economy, it harms ours too, we are signing because some things are more important than money. We all share this world.

Europeans form a pretty large group of people. It is nonesense to say that they ALL cant stand the USA, or that they all have the same reason for liking or disliking them.

Most people I know do not hate the US, but are AFRAID of them.
Think about it: Everything the US Gov. does, has a large impact on our lifes, but we cannot vote against it.

The US are also a very religious and patriotic country. In Europe, religion and patriotism are seen as the largest thread to democracy, because they are the best weapons if you want to manipulate people. We have seen this happen in our own past, and we see it today in the US and the middle east.

The Democrats get on TV and constantly accuse and bash the Presidents' policies because they hate him, not because they are correct... this hatred is then shared with the Europeans who see the Democrats have no respect for their own boss. The Muslim terrorists also have alot of anti-american propaganda on TV which compliments the slander the Democrats issue out

Most Europeans don't mind us.

They have a problem with a lot of our manufacturing choices.
And all the chemicals we put into our crops- and the growing of genetically modified food.- They don't want it in their country.
That's one thing they don't like about us.

Another would be the fact that the US has a lot of leaks in higher positions- and nothing is kept a secret.

But overall- they are pretty accepting.

Because few american's have passports so can't leave the US, as a result they have a very peverted view of the world but judge based on their crappy news networks. I have no problem with the US in general but i think Bush is an idiot and the general US public need a proper education in world affairs.

it's because when most americans travel to europe they have the arrogance to think/expect everyone to speak english. when they find out it's not true, they get pissy and rude, and so do the europeans experiencing it. if you go over and at least TRY to speak a little of their language and be humble about not knowing the language you'll have a better experience. i've seen it first hand. when i was in paris i was NEVER treated rudely, because i kept my humility on my sleeve. simple honesty.

Jealousy

Because the U.S. is arrogant and self-centered. It has no good sense of world community.
The U.S. is constantly going around the world forcing its moral high-ground on other people, then we have Enrons, poor FEMA reactions, and much political corruption.
I think Europeans want the U.S. to remove the board from its eye, before it goes around removing slivers from other's.

The whole world hates the U.S. because it has the power and influence. Nothing new in the world about jealousy.
