I always hear about IP tunnels at work and I have a vague idea of what it is, but would like a full explanation of it. Thanks!

An IP tunnel is a way of securing data during transmission over the internet.

Think of it as a private road that only those with the correct password can use. But this private road is hidden inside a public road that everyone else uses.
Its a private road in public view but no one can get the data transmitted over this private road without the correct password or network information. If someone does try and break into it all sorts of alarms go off and the theif is caught red handed.

In layman's terms

An Ip Tunnel is like a small secure pipe... that rides along the IP networks. It's a secure structure that creates a virtual POINT TO POINT connection.

An analogy would be if you had a couple of friends... in adjacent houses... instead of cupping their hands and YELLING out their bedroom window... where everyone could hear... two tin can with KITE CORD would be their IP TUNNEL.

It's secured by encryption... and then the protocol handles the rest.

I hope that helps.

Technically, an IP tunnel passes one protocol inside another. It doesn't have to be for secure encrypted vpn like the other posters mention, but those are probably the most easily understood examples.

These two are essentially correct and without getting much more specific I think they have done a good job explaining it. If you want to learn more, do a search on VPNs (Virtual Private Network).
