Listen to the lyrics, he says
'But I'll never forget the way you feel right now'
And then he says he'll do anything for love but won't do THAT, which is forget the way you feel right now.
He actually admitted that on the Howard Stern show 2 weeks ago.

He's strictly talking about fornication. That is not to say that the mental, spiritual and emotional attachments aren't involved. He is firmly monogamous with his woman.
He will not fool around behind her back to get some nookie on the side. That is the ONLY thing he won't do for 'love'.
He does say he won't screw around on her, but by that time he's saying "I won't do that" to anything and everything she's afraid he'll do. You can almost see him frothing at the mouth at that point, fighting off the urge to just force her down to the ground and take her whether she wants it or not!
He says "I won't do that." at first but when she says he is going to leave her his tone is totally different. He wants her to know that that he's telling the truth. It's very possible telling white lies is something he would do for love but he would most definitely not leaving her and sleep around.

In the song he won't do "that", by that he means all of womens greatest fears. He won't leave her, He won't cheat on her, He won't hurt her. He will do anything in the world to make her happy and stand by her no matter what. If you listen to the end of tthe song when she starts singing she asks him all these questions and he says he won't do "that". It is really a beautiful song.

He won't say he loves the girl he's momentarily with. Case in Point;
"Before we go any further, do you love me? will you love me 4ever?" She is begging for him to say this.
"Let me sleep on it." He's just wants a "peice,' so he puts her off by lying to her and telling her he will give her "an answer in the mornin."; all the while, thinking he's gonna get lucky.

he says he won't do "that" however if you really listen to the song and the lyrics he is saying that he will not do "that " that hurts her or ends the love. so what ever "that" is and mostly "that" means what ever for everone...... everyone has something different that they will not do even if it is for love. so "that" is really what ever you think it is. talk about cleaver.... got us all talking about a song that is over 10 years old ......

never understood that song. If he would do anything for love then why is he saying that he won't do that. He doesn't specify what he is talking about but it is definitely contradictory.

I'll never get that song, and I don't like that line "I would do anything for love but I won't do that"
So, what then? :p

"But I won't do that" and that is LIE
And I would do anything for love,
I'd run right into hell and back
I would do anything for love,
I'll never lie to you and that's a fact
