Microsoft Word can't open .pdfs. What you're looking at are apparently Word documents. Adobe Reader can't open those.

If your file as an extention of .doc, .rtf, .txt it will use microsoft word to open it. if your file has an extention of .pdf it will use adobe reader to open the document. So i'm sure if the method mention by shmifty_14 will not work for you unless you have Acrobat Reader, which is the better version you pay for and is better than Adobe Reader. They also have other programs like PDF Converter that will also convert your files for you.
If you want to change it you have to convert it to .pdf format.
I have acrobat reader. if you want me to convert a file for you just send me an email to teehustlin@yahoo.com. Let me know if you sent it because I hardly ever check my emails.
