the iPod is an mp3 player. An .mp3 is a music file type.
There are many types of mp3 players on the market. In my experience, the iPod is easier to use for those who are not good with computers. The iPod also has better sound when connecting it to a higher fidelity stereo setup such as your car or home stereo.
iPods are, however, a little more expensive than other mp3 players and I've heard that it is a little more dificult to get service/repairs.

i would suggest mp3 palyers, as they have a wider range of song capacity, more supported subscription services, and they are generally cheaper than ipods.
some of them are even better than ipods
all the answers above me, they are just jealous because they have ipods but they really want mp3 players
to all the people above me, YOU KNOW WHAT PEOPLE MEAN WHEN THEY SAY "IPOD OR MP3"

Ipod is also an MP3 player. I guess you could choose based on price.

an ipod plays mp3, so the that's not really going to help you decide.
what will is:
how much space you want to hold.
a few song, or a few albums.
that's the question.
