yes, there are. I had never seen one until I started college in Wooster Ohio. They are very common in Wayne County, Ohio.
Actually, they don't have many "normal" squirrels there. I don't know about other states, but I know they do exist

My parents watched what they thought was a black squirrel leaping about on a Cypriot building site next door to our hotel for about half an hour before realising it was actually a bin bag.
Having said that, any animal could have a melanistic (all black) version, as that sort of mutation happens frequently in most species and what you saw may well have been just a normal species (e.g. a grey or red squirrel if you are British) with a black coat mutation. So you are not mad, unlike my parents.

Yep. The ones in my area supposedly came from Russia. They were only seen in one local city thirty years ago, but have spread to most surrounding towns.
The first time I saw one, I wondered why a black "kitten" had such a big tail. It was an adult squirrel.

we have 2 large oak trees in our back yard, so we have all kinds of squirrels: red, grey with white belly, and black and brown ones.
Yes, we have alot of black squirrels. They are not that uncommon, it just depends on where you live.
If you don't have any nuts to put out for the squirrels, try leaving some dried corn, they love it. You may see the black squirrel again, but be careful, of all the squirrels, the black ones are the most aggressive!

Yes, went I went to Canada last year I saw more black squirrels than grey/red ones. They look more like rats with tails than squirrels. The ones in the UK are much rarer though apparently there is a 'cluster' of them in Cambridgeshire and have been spotted in Hertfordshire.

You're not mad, and it's not the cat. Squirrels come in all different colors. Some are rare like black and white ones. But if you see any purple or blue ones, than you can consider insanity.

Yes, Black, Red, Grey and Brown squirrels do exist. I saw a Albino once! It depends mainly on the Geography, Habitat and Climate where you find them.

Yes there is. We have them all over the place (New Jersey) since someone brought them into the area a number of years ago and released them. Someone else saw a white one too.
