Sugar Land is the city to live in for Ft. Bend County. It was just on the national news as one of the best cities to live in for the U.S. The housing market is booming and it has a thriving business community. The schools are very good. Sugar Land is what is commonly referred to as a Master Planned Community. It would also be considered a bedroom community to Houston. If you are looking for a decent sized house less than 150K, you will need to look elsewhere. Also what the news reports do not tell you is that Sugar Land is on one of the most congested and traveled routes going into Houston (Hwy 59). Katy Texas will have cheaper housing but is further away from Houston and also on another congested freeway (I-10). Katy recently was on the local news for a growing gang problem. If you are willing to check out other communities outside of Ft. Bend County I would suggest the Pearland, Alvin, Manvel areas along Hwy 288. These are in Brazoria county bordering Ft. Bend Co. Pearland is a fast growing community with affordable housing, low crime and good schools. Alvin and Manvel are country towns that are growing as Pearland develops out. Housing is very affordable in both of these towns, but I do not know much about the school district, other than the Alvin school district is having to build more schools (2nd high school just opened this year) because part of the Alvin school district extends into the Pearland city limits on the far west side close to Ft. Bend County. Hope this helps.

Katy is a good place to start. Katy sits on Fort Bend, Harris, and Wharton counties. The crime rate isn't real high. The houses are not necessarily cheap, but that depends on which part of Katy you move to. The least expensive housing seems to be in the areas north of I-10. If you want a new house though...you are looking at no less than 6 digits for most, especially if you opt to live in Fort Bend.
Katy schools are excellent. ...and Katy is very close to Houston. The biggest downside to Katy is probably the taxes as they can rather high, but I think it is possible that it depends on what part of Katy you move to.
I would also suggest researching other communities you would be interested in. Also drive around in each community to see if it is a place you would want to live.
