They both have gone down significantly in recent years.

Trading Places is one of my all time favorite movies, so I have to give the edge to Eddie Murphy.

Very good comparison. Both were great stand-up comedians who didn't perform as long as we would have liked.
Both men have some great skits on Saturday Night Live
Both made some terrific movies:
Eddie Murphy - 48 Hours, Trading Places, Coming To America, Beverly Hills Cop
Steve Martin - Roxanne, All of Me, Plains, Trains and Automobiles,
Man with two brains, Dead Men Dont Wear Plaid, Grand Canyon,

Both made very successful comedies that attracted wide audience:
Eddie Murphy - Doctor Doolittle, Nutty Professor, Shrek, Daddy Day Care
Steve Martin - Parenthood, Father of the Bride, Cheaper by the Dozen, The Jerk, L.A. Story, Three Amigos

Both made absolute pieces of crap:
Eddie Murphy - Best Defense, Harlem Nights, Pluto Nash, Vampire in Brooklyn, Showtime, Holy Man, Distinguished Gentleman, I Spy, Metro
Steve Martin - Bringing Down the House, Housesitter, Sgt. Pepper

Common Movie - Bowfinger (both are very good).

Its almost a toss-up - I'll give the comedic edge to Murphy, but I would say Martin is a slightly better actor.

Eddie Murphy in the 80's, but I don't know about now. Steve Martin, he was kind of funny in 'Bringing down the House'

Steve Martin has better movies. His comedy is from the 70's. He was excellent on SNL.

Eddie Murphy has mediocre to good movies. His comedy was indescibable. His time on SNL was historic. He was hillarious in the VHS release of "Delerious". I have yet to see a comedian like Eddie Murphy doing stand-up.

My votes is for Eddie Murphy mainly because of his stand-up.

"cursing" Eddie Murphy was the greatest comedian and comedic actor we've seen in a while, this new wimpy Eddie Murphy sucks.

Steve Martin has has some great movies too. Too tough to call....

They have different styles and are not even in the same catagory so it is hard to choose...

It would be more like Steve Martin & Chevy Chase or Eddie Murphy & Richard Pryor...

Eddie Murphy reached his peak in the early 80's and it's been downhill ever since, with the exception of "Life". He also was in one of my favorite comedies, "Trading Places"

Steve Martin I think is the better comedian when you look at all of his work combined. Think of all the great comedies he's been in. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", "The Man With Two Brains", "The Jerk", "All of Me", "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", "Roxanne" etc...
