Read all of the Wizard of Oz books, not just the first one. They are GREAT and I'm in my 40s telling you this. Also, all of the Little House on the Prairie books are good as well. You will find that not much that really happened to Laura Ingalls Wilder happened on the show the way it did in real life. They are a great series of books as well. And, if you like macabre, Steven King, all the way.

I strongly recommend White Teeth by Zadie Smith. It's funny, it makes you think, it's got everything from racial disharmony to parent-child issues to childhood friendships. Zadie Smith is British, with a Jamaican mum, and one of the characters is very much like her...though i hope it isn't her! Hahaha!
But seriously, it's a bloody good book. It's more than 500 pages long. I couldn't put it down. I was done in 2 days ;)
Go read it. Enjoy!

If you like fantasy, give King Fortis the Brave a try. It's about a pair of twins that are transported to a magical world where they are caught in the middle of a battle for control of the land. It has humor, action and adventure and is one of my favorite books!

the following may not be as amusing as the fiction, but it's very helpful for understanding how human consciousness operates, and how not to wind up feaful, sad and confused as is the case with many humans. *the complete idiot's guide to toltec wisdom* don't be put off by the title, the toltecs, like students of esoteric wisdom the world over, understood the intricacies and "weak points" of the human mind. if you take the time with it you will be greatly rewarded. leading a "conscious" life is the best gift you can give yourself and to the others with whom you'll be interacting over the course of your lifetime. the author is sheri rosenthal. good luck! :-)
