If you take a class for no credit, it won't affect your GPA. Which means if you end up getting a solid grade in the class (say, a B), it won't help your GPA. However, if you screw up the class and get something like a C-, it won't affect your GPA.

I'd definitely take a letter grade whenever possible because when your employers/grad schools/whatever are looking at your transcript, they are not going to be impressed with a bunch of pass/no passes. You usually also must take a letter grade in a class that is part of your major.

Usually your university will only allow you to take a certain number of pass/fail credits. They will also restrict how many, if any, you can take within your major.

Outside of your major, it's not that important. The only reason to take the class for a letter grade is if you think you will get an A. That will look good on your transcript and bring up your GPA. However, there is no penalty for taking a class as credit/no credit or pass/fail. Not as long as you pass!

Depends on your university policy. At UCLA, the default is taking a class for a letter grade, and you can only take pass/no pass once in a while. If it's not for your major, ask yourself if the class is going to be easy or hard. Easy - letter grade. Hard - why are you taking it? Haha. If you like challenging yourself, then props to you. Take it for a letter grade anyway to prove to yourself you are smart and know a lot of stuff outside your major.

It wont help/hurt your major GPA, it may look bad when you apply for jobs in the future. But actually, many students use it, but there are limits normally to the number of which you can take. At my college, the professor has to okay it, which is usually mentioned as not possible the first day of class! See your advisor for the specifics. Good luck.

Yes, taking a class for a letter grade contributes to your GPA. You don't want too have too many credit/noncredit courses on your transcript - it doesn't look very good for grad schools or employers (if they check it)

not really! It still counts against your GPA so you may just want to take the credit option.
