I was told by our supplier that the rod depends on the water you have. The wrong application will give you smelly sulfur type water.

It might be B.S. but it didnt change anything of the cost of the water heater.

I imagine that either would work; I think that magnesium is more popular, and might work better because aluminum forms a hard oxide which protects the metal from attack. Aluminum would probably be a bit cheaper, and would contribute less hardness to the water, but that is a tiny issue in this application.

Well.... toss a coin. Both are used as well as one of zinc(which I would not recommend).. the other two.. Mg or Al are good but I would LEAN towards the Aluminum because the aluminum alloys will have the tendency more to reduce the incidence of hydrogen gas evolution within the cells

Depends on your water type.If the zinc didn't last go to the Aluminum(less reactive).If you get sulfur smell you need to change the anode hardness.
