Depends on what you are using it for. It drains electricity of course and will cost a lot of money in the long run, if you decide to have it running all the time.
I have my computer running 24/7 without any problems.

You better off shutting down your computer if you're not using it. Standby mode still consumes electricity and it's a waste of energy. Plus it rakes up your bills.
Hibernation mode (off by default in Windows XP) however is a better solution, but I remember reading somewhere (can't remember the source) that if you're not using the computer for more than an hour it's better to shut it down.

I'd put it in hibernate if its not going to be used for that long. Putting in standby isn't going to hurt anything but it is going to use more power.
