How many sonograms do you have during pregnancy?

I had my first sonogram at 9 1/2 weeks and I go back in a couple weeks and will be 19 weeks to get another. I wanted to know the sex but if they can't tell then will I have any more sonograms before the baby is born? Thanks!

The norm is an ultrasound at beginning and again midway through pregnancy. If they can't tell the sex, then you are out of luck. Get the midway ultrasound closer to 21 or 22 weeks to increase the odds. Other indications for later ultrasounds are "measuring large or small for dates", "diabetes", and "high risk pregnancies".

I think most insurances limit to 3 unless something happens(you fall) or you are at high risk. I got one at 7 weeks then waited till I was over 18 so I could find out the sex. Also, your doctor could order one if he thinks there is any danger. I was extremely huge and they needed to know the size of the baby so I got to have another. I'd cancel the one in a couple of weeks and wait until you are about 20 weeks along. they should be able to tell you the sex of the baby then(as long as the legs arent closed). LOL

My understanding is that insurance companies will only cover 2 ultrasounds. I live in China and the Swiss doctor at the Western clinic I go to does an ultrasound at every visit. I've had 9 ultrasounds so far. I know I will have 2 more before I leave here to go home to the US for delivery. While I'm thrilled to see my child each visit, I'm a little concerned that there might be some negative impact of having so many ultrasounds.

I had one the very first appt I had, to see the heart beat. The baby was the size of a bean, Then around 20 weeks i had another to determine the sex, and I will have one more to know the size of the baby only due to having gestional diabtets. But the norm is 2 times

unless there is a possible issue with you or the baby, you won't get another until around 18-20 weeks. I had one done every other week for the first 14 weeks due to a cyst.. then I had one at 19 weeks.. I've got gestational diabetes (diet controlled) and a possible trisomy 18 baby.. haven't had an ultrasound since 19 weeks and I'm due Tuesday. I haven't had another ultrasound, mainly because not much could of changed since the 19 week scan, it was a detailed fetal scan, and my stomach measurements are not showing the baby being on the large size.

Some caregivers don't do any ultrasounds, but instead follow the ACOG guidelines that an ultrasound should not be a routine procedure.

I had one u/s with my first (done as a routine) and none with #2 and #3. The one I had during my first PG was at 16 weeks and we were able to find out the sex.

Actually, not knowing with my other two was very cool.

well it depends on your insurance company. i am only allowed 3 sonograms. 1 at the beginning around 8 weeks i had my second one at 20 weeks (when they determined the sex of the baby) and ill have my last one at 36 weeks. if you are having complications then they may do more.

I never had any sonograms done. I wish I would have. I would have loved to know the sex of my baby before she was born.

I had one at 5 weeks ( to see if there was more than 1 baby because I was n fertility drugs) I had another at 9 weeks (had some bleeding) had another at 13 weeks ( had the other 2 at different hospitals so the due dat was off) had another at 20 weeks..and had another at 36 weeks (to check that blood flow was ok inthe cord) I seriously thought that my baby was going to glow when he was born
