It's one of those legendary buried treasures. It's on Oak Island just off Nova Scotia. Two boys found what seemed to be a pit under a tree. There was block & tackle on the tree, so they assumed someone had lowered something heavy into the pit. There are tales of pirates burying treasure. They began digging. The hole they dug was deep. Every ten feet there was a wooden platform. A stone with strange symbols was found too. One morning, the hole was filled with water. Since then, many men have spent much time and money trying to get the alleged treasure. A few have even died in the hole. Someone spent much time and effort on the pit. Tunnels come from the sea to flood it. There are many wild speculations about what may be in this Money Pit. The first ones were that Captain Kidd buried treasure, but later ones include such wild theories as the crown jewels of France and the Holy Grail (the pre-Da Vinci Code Grail). I wouldn't waste any time or money on any of these "treasures", e.g. Lost Dutchman Mine, Money Pit, etc., etc.

It's a hole in a body of water that you throw money into. AKA a boat.

Could also be a hole in the sky you throw money into. AKA a plane

Could also be a hole in the street you throw money into. AKA a European car

All of these places are black holes where money goes in but does not come out.

Also could be said of many wives, but I don't want to sleep on the couch tonight.

Movie with Tom Hanks about buying and refurbishing a house. General reference to anything that soaks up more money than it is worth, thus references to boats, planes, houses, etc.
