I guess I already have my answer..

but I've been digging these cats since I saw them in a local bar back when everyone was still fawning over grunge and they were flying the punk (albeit pop-punk) flag. I wouldn't say they've ever been my favourite - but I've found them to be consistantly good and listening to them now and in light of their most recent album and powerful video - I really think, when we look back at these years, these boys will be the real stand-outs of the generation.. so I have to say, thank the stars for ________________ ?

sorry, let me rephrase that to last 12 years - I was too broad - I'm thinking "post grunge" after 94 when Cobain died .. while Pearl Jam, Metallica and Nirvana are all excellent bands in their own right - excepting PJ I consider the other two to be pretty much irrelevant in the context of that time frame.
I'm also thinking of more in the "punk" vein, not the "heavy metal" vein.

The Melvins, my friend, have been keeping it real since '86, and are still putting out great albums, touring, and doing side project with fervor.

Wouldn't have been my personal choice, but based on what you're saying, this is my guess. :)
