try getting your son foot prints or hand prints on a piece of paper turn it into a card with a saying like:
i love following in your foot steps, happy birthday daddy from your little guy or

having you as my daddy is the best gift ever Happy Birthday Daddy from your favourite admirer or

make little steps out of his foot print and cut them out, place them throughout the house so your husband has to follow the foot steps to seek out his present .
you can leave directions like follow the footprints - or leave clues underneath each foot print with where to find his present. or
little hand prints on a card that reads my hands adore you since you first held me in your hands, my hands adore you daddy, happy birthday

have fun and i wish you all a very happy birthday indeed...
