My husband and I just got married and we're in the process of building a house. He works in excavation/construction and he's serving as the General Contractor. I was just hoping that I could get any advice on things that we should make sure to include or thing we shouldn't do or things that we should be aware of. Between him and his family we have pretty much every aspect taken care of but any advice anyone has is much appreciated.

Answer number one certainly has a valid answer.

I built one,,,alone,,, and never again, though I still work at the trades.

I do suggest one other thing, since you seem very confidant. I took pictures of every phase of construction, and especially wanted that record ao all things hidden,,,IE: Plumbing and electrical work in particular. Anything that can be referred to down the road if an issue pops up.

It's too involved for a Yahoo answers question.

I suggest you get some books on the subject. There are many publishers for books on building your own home, which thousands of people have used as references for their owner-builder projects.

I purchased these books by Robert Roskind and highly recommend them. They are several years old and have been updated, but the material is timeless.

Also, search Amazon using terms such as contractor owner builder home construction

Best of luck to you.

Not to sound like a jerk but why are you doing this without a general contractor? Building a home is a large undertaking, not only do you have to know the local codes, but you also need to know all the steps involved in building a home. Coordination of all the trades is one of the hardest things to do, you wouldn't want your plumber showing up to install pipes with the electrical in the wall...ect. You are just starting a new life with your partner and building a new home is not a great way to get it going....

Don't forget permits and inspections. I know it sounds rude, not intended to be,i have seen many a home-owner builder forget.
