I like the Telecaster but the Gibson SG is awful nice too. Come now you string benders, help me out here if you can please! P.S. I'm really not very good ( Wow, I'm being generous with myself at that! ) so a starter is what I'm looking for.

NO POWER? Come on now! How the heck can I torment those far away? I'll think about it. Maybe with a pick up!

It's going to hurt to hear this, but if you're just starting get an acoustic. They're easier to learn on. If you have your heart set on an electric, personally I prefer Telecasters but you should go with whatever feels more comfortable for you.

Check out the website http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ Both Gibson and Fender have "knock-off" brands -- Epiphone for Gibson, Squier for Fender. It all depends on personal preference and what you want to do with your guitar. I like Telecasters, but those single-coil pickups make a lot of noise. The SG is good for rock n' roll and all types of metal, including EMO and speed metal. If you're looking for versatility, get a Fender "Fat Strat." It has two single-coil pickups and a humbucker at the bridge. They usually come with tremolo systems too, so you can do some serious dive-bombing if you like...

I love my 71' strat. I think they are pretty universal. Light, can play blues, country, rock, perhaps some metal. Granted they aren't the best at each type of music, but the sounds they provide are adaquate enough to work for all of them. I also like a Les Paul or Paul Reed, but I spent way too much money for each one. They have a really heavy price tag, and that may be too much for starting out. Give a stratocaster a chance, I really like them.

Tele got the twang, SG got the growl, up to you what sound you want to go with. Also, the tele is a 25.5" scale, and the SG is 24.75", so the necks may feel a little different.
Personally, I would go with the tele. Not sure whats her name is talking about, an acoustic is NOT easier to play, and the headstock of a tele in no way impedes any access.

Telecasters are geared more towards rhythm guitar playing, and SG's lean towards lead/solo playing. I had this same debate with myself a while ago. I went with a Tele, because I was able to find one with a solid maple neck (I don't like rosewood fret boards). You should decide where your focus lies, and go with the accommodating guitar, both are classic, well built, and very playable guitars.

we all started somewhere, I would go with the Gibson but thats a personal prefferance. You have to pick them both up and see which one feels "natural" to you....Most of all have fun with it.
Good Luck

Get a cheap, generic brand first. Then get a Gibson if you decide to stick with it.
