How do I get an avatar to use in online forums other than Yahoo ones?

I need basic step-by-step instructions on getting an avatar - what images I can use (ie. can I choose any picture I find online?), how I link this image to my name in online forums etc. I want to be able to use the same avatar across all forums, not just have one that I can use solely within Yahoo. Please bear in mind that I am a complete novice in this area!

Go to your "Answers" home. Click on your current avatar. Right below that click on "edit my profile". This gives you step by step instructions.
