Doing mathematics strengths your brain. Also you do use some algebra skills in real life without realizing it. If you figure out how much you are saving when you buy a shirt that is 25% off, you are using a bit of algebra. You also use algebra if you are trying to find the quickest way to get somewhere, you may not be using the formulas but the mathematics is there somewhere.

Oh one other thing, if you plan on going to college at all you will have to take some sort of math class and you may want to learn this now so that your math class in college will be easier. If your math class seems easier, you will have more time to spend on your other classes.

Here's the thing about higher mathematics. You may not use it if you plan on becoming a soccer mom. But, there are lots of jobs where you will have to have a basic knowledge of algebra. Your school is just preparing you for college.

I think that college isn't so much about making sure you know how to calculate pi. It's really just a test to see how hard you are willing to work without giving up. Ask someone who graduated from college ten years ago how often they use algebra. Unless they are an engineer, it's probably not that often. But, when it's all said and done, they have a degree that tells an employer that this person is not a quitter. They were faced with large tasks, and they completed them to the best of their abiltiy.

If you spend a lot of time being 'mad' at algebra, it will only make you hate it more, and it will actually be harder. If you're struggling, you need to search for someone who can teach you in a way that you understand. Maybe an older sibling, maybe your parents, maybe a teacher from another grade, maybe a nieghbor. If you take mathmatics in small steps, and only learn one new concept at a time, it's not all that hard. But, if you get behind, don't pay attention in class, or don't do your homework, you'll just get farther and farther behind.

Whoa there pardner...

We do use it every day in life. It is possible you don't realize it as being algebra...

Brick masons and block layers use it all the time to compute how many bricks or blocks will be required to construct a particular structure.

Carpenters/contractors, and rug salesmen/installers use it to calculate the amount of lumber needed or square yards of carpet required in construction of a home.

Car salesmen use algebra to determine monthly car payments on 36, 48, and 60 month auto loans.

Bankers use algebra to evaluate the estimated net worth of a Bond or Anuity after 10, 20, 0r 30 years.

The list of examples could go on for a long time. The trick is to learn how to work with numbers and possible ways to implement that knowledge will begin to jump out at you over time.

Of course you use it in life. At the very least, you use the rigorous training in thinking to be a better thinker in general. You probably will use it to pass whatever grade you're in and eventually to pass the SAT or ACT so you can go to college. And you may use for other reasons, too. I use simple algebra all the time -- for instance, if I am 60 inches tall, how much should I weigh to be proportionate to whatever model I'm currently worshiping, who is 69 inches tall and 120 pounds. Algebra helps you figure stuff like that out (not life and death or anything, but useful!)

The insuation of this question is a little silly. We use Algebra all the time. When you go to the mall and there is a shirt which is 30% off. How do you know what the price is? price - price *30%

Algebra teaches you rational math skills useful for everyday life.

Ah, but you use it every day.

If I earn 9.25 an hour, how many hours do I have to work to make 200 dollars a week?

How many blouses can I buy at 22 dollars each if I have 150 dollars to spend on clothes?

How long will it take me to drive 125 miles to Los Angeles if the average speed will be 55 miles per hours? When do I need to leave to get to the wedding at 2 PM?

How big a cake do I need to buy for the shower if I am going to have to feed 25 people?

I have 500 dollars to spend on carpeting a room, 12 feet by 15 feet. What is the amount per square foot that I can spend on carpeting and where can I get this price?

I can afford to give my kids a 20 dollar a week allowance for all three of them, so how much should I give each kid.

They say that the max you should spend on a house payment is 40 percent of your gross salary. I make 3500 dollars a month. What's the most I can spend for my house payment?

I could go on...all practical problems, all of which, no doubt, you can solve. You are using algebra when you do.

If you can't solve...choose your friends and advisors wisely....

What are you, like 14?

You'll use algebra and use it often. Should be beat into you until its absolutely second nature.

Once I went into a fast food restraunt. The bill was like $5.20... I gave the kid $20.20. He didn't ring it up quite right but hit the "go" button... so of course it had the wrong amount of change on the screen. He had no clue. Punched some numbers into the calculator.. no help there either. Finally I had to tell him and he was very relieved.

You don't want to be like that.

definite. there grow to be this one time even as i grow to be being chased by technique of a large alien from the planet Zorbog. He cornered me on a roof suitable, and my in uncomplicated words selection grow to be to bounce. I had to scrupulously calculate my trajectory and % at which to run with the intention to bounce on to the subsequent roof and to no longer land on the line 30 memories down. If I hadn't taken algebra back in extreme college that alien might want to have killed me.

You don't have to use algebra or ever take it. Don't bother. Just have lots of money to spend on products created by people who DO use algebra that you will need to purchase in life. We appreciate your support.

We don't?

Speak for yourself. There's plenty of people on this earth that use algebra every day. There's plenty of people, including myself, that use things like single and multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, analysis, etc., on a daily basis.

You could use that "argument" with just about everything you learn in school except perhaps reading.

But if I were you, I wouldn't worry about using algebra in your daily life. I'm sure your cash register will do your work for you. Ya want fries with that?
