See if it is a screen brightness problem. Look for the FUNCTION button and brightness buttons. Hold the FUNCTION button and strike the brightness several times. Do the same with the Contrast button.
Then look for the Video Output mode button. That also should be near the brightness and contrast. Hold the FUNCTION button again, and tap the Video button once. Wait a moment, and hit it again if nothing happens. (You video might have been diverted to the External monitor port).
If all fails, you might contact the manufacturer's tech support. It is possible that your screen is busted. It is very costly to get fixed, unless you have their special warranty. Weight the quote with the idea of getting a new computer.
For your next laptop, I recommend Toshiba, they are awesome; and their tech support is superb. (Oh, and the batteries don't EXPLODE like on Dell notebooks).

It's also possible that the backlight is burned out. That happened to me some months ago. The way to tell if it is the backlight is to shine a flashlight at the screen from an angle. When I did that, I could see my desktop with its icons, etc. Rather than try to have the backlight fixed, I bought a 17" external flat screen monitor. I really like it though it does mean that the notebook is no longer portable.

Also try plugging an external monitor to your laptop... then use the function key to switch the mode. If you get a picture through the monitor then your'll know its your screen... What usually goes out first is the backlight in the display screen. You will need to take it to a repair shop for that. If you get no picture from the external monitor also, then you'll know its probably the video chip.
Good luck,
Tim

Your video card could have gone out. Or, your monitor on the laptop, could be recieving no power. My suggestion: Take it to a computer repair technition. Or, scream and throw the laptop at the wall.

Something similar happened to mine. I went crazy with worry, but then what i did was I took my battery out for a few minutes then put it back in and every thing was normal. what kind of laptop is it. If it is a dell you might also want to look at battery recalls. I hope this helps!
