There's not much difference really. Modern is the word used to describe our era. It's not necessarily good. The modern era could be described as the era in which western ideas were promulgated, forcefully or otherwise, around the world. Ideas like democracy, capitalism, globalisation are all ideas of the modern era,
. They are all, also, western ideas, so I believe that while the words strictly mean something entirely different, in essence they wind up being about the same.

It is not the same. Modernisation is to advance into a more modern
way of living, or ruling, but holding onto important traditions of that
nation. Westernisation is to change completely into the western style
of living and ruling.

No. This has been one of the problems holding back modernisation in China. It was confused with Westernisation which many felt rejected their deep sense of their own culture. As a result, certainly in the 20th century, they looked inward for solutions and isolated themselves internationally.

No. Look at Japan, they have modernised, but they are not western. China will not become the USA simply because they are getting all industrial. Don't you know that 'East is East and West is West, and ne'er the twain shall meet'... of course, they do meet in a way, but the result is an interesting mish-mash of culture and technology, belonging wholly to neither extreme.

Not really, but modernsation means the use of new technologies, social and business structures, and the west has always thought itself the leader of modern industrial life. But now Japan is the most efficient industrial country, and S. Korea and China are following suit. Soon it will be Easternisation.

I think increasingly our western view is not modern at all, we are regressing in many ways.
You do not need to become a clone of the US to be modern.
If you hold progressive ideas, and values, I think that makes you modern. Seeing how you can improve life for everyone!
